Perforated Landscape
2023 (excerpt)
The perforated landscape series materializes the void as a physical presence.
Drawing from the Lebanese sociopolitical context of the past few years which saw mass fluxes of people leaving the country in search for a more suitable future, I revisit landscape photographs shot during my time in Lebanon to create perforations across them. The end result is a landscape devoid of any trace of human presence or activity on its grounds.
Photographs intended as landscape imageries are transformed into territories, ones that speak of an exodus. The physical fragility of the photograph raises questions on the future of the landscape and consequently that of the country when it is devoided of its people. Both become porous.
This work was developed during the 2022-2023 Saradar Foundation art residency in Lebanon. It is part of a bigger reflection on the loss of the familiar and separation from one’s land.
